Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre
(Arnhem Land)
Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre is in Yirrkala, a main town in northeast Arnhem. It is a major capital of the Yolŋu nation, which extends west to Maningrida and south to Numbulwar. It is a history-making centre of political leadership around land and sea rights and a dynamic hotspot of artistic expression.
Artists from Buku are well-known for their traditional barks and more recently innovative works etched on metal, are they are consistently selected and awarded prizes in the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award, Bark and 3D categories.
This stronghold of ceremonial culture lives up to its name: Buku-Larrnggay (the feeling on your face as it is struck by the first rays of the sun ie, facing east).
