Janganpa Jukurrpa – Painting in my own way

“My name is Steven Jupurrurla Nelson. I live and paint in Yuendumu Community for Warlukurlangu Artists. I grew up in Nyirripi Community, not far from here, and then later moved to Yuendumu. My mother was from Nyirripi and my father was from Papunya, however, I was grown up by Norah Napaljarri Nelson and her husband Frank Bronson Jakamarra Nelson. They were both famous artists and I remember their paintings leaning against the walls and that’s where I first learnt about painting. I never thought I would make paintings myself.”
“I first started working at Warlukurlangu Artists as an Arts Worker. I would base coat the canvas for the other artists and make their paints. Then the art centre managers started encouraging me to try painting myself. I was nervous. I said to them no I don’t know how to paint. They kept encouraging me, asking me, humbugging me. Eventually I said I would try a little canvas, because they were so persistent, and I thought it might stop them from asking me! I tried a small canvas and then another one, and then another one. And each time they kept selling them. I didn’t think I could still be painting now so many years later. It makes me laugh now. I used to walk around by myself, sometimes lonely. Now I come and paint at the art centre every day. From that first small little canvas to now painting on all different sizes. I paint large ones too, bigger than this table. I’m happy to be working hard and making an income. People always ask me what I’m painting? I say to them that I’m painting in my own way. I’m painting in my own style. I have my father’s country – Janganpa and Marlu. I don’t really know the Jukurrpa in detail and I haven’t been to those places. When I paint, I am not painting Jukurrpa or country. I am just having fun. Making my marks and pushing the paint across the canvas. I paint for my feeling, to keep busy, to make me happy. When I’m painting, I’m thinking about my mother and father and that they were painters too. They gave me the idea of painting, but I paint with my own feeling. I’m happy and proud and feel strong when I am painting.”
