Turtiyanginari amintiya Purrungbarri – Ochre and Stringybark
Solo exhibition by Conrad Tipungwuti
In this exhibition Turtiyanginari amintiya Purrungbarri – Ochre and Stringybark, Conrad Tipungwuti brings his unique combination of gestural jilamara (painting design in ochres) to both linen paintings and for the first time a significant collection of purrungbarri (flat stringybark). Using both a paint brush and kayimwagakimi (Tiwi ironwood painting comb) Tipungwuti applies locally sourced earth pigments to create innovative compositions that draw on the circular motifs of Kulama (Tiwi coming of age ceremony) and yirrinkiripwoja (ochre design painted on the face for ceremony).
His work celebrates his life-long engagement with culture and ceremony on the islands, while foregrounding the innovation at the heart of Tiwi art making.
